Downys at Our Suet

I love watching these pretty birds at our suet.

When there is no red spot of feathers on the back of its head, it is a female.

I found a few fun facts about Downy Woodpeckers.

They are known as a symbol of bravery and hard work.

They have special features surrounding their nostrils that prevent them from breathing in wood chips.

There’s a spongy elastic material between their bill and skull that protects their brain from shock.

Downys create excavates in areas hidden by fungus or lichens for some camouflage.

They don’t sing songs but drum loudly instead.

A male downy on a windy day.

Look at those beautiful, tiny, fragile feathers.

Good job, God, on creating a beautiful bird with everything he needs to stay warm on a cold, windy, winter day.
