As far as I can tell, there are two squirrel nests on our property, with many more in the woodlot behind us. This one is toward the back of our lot.
This one is in the front yard – in a tree close to the road.
This nest could fit any finch-sized bird. It is located close to the road – not far from the squirrel nest.
This tiny hummingbird nest is also close to the road. I don’t often find hummingbird nests because they usually choose bushes that don’t lose their leaves.
There are times when it is nice to have bare trees.
How interesting — I thought squirrels nested underground like rabbits! Hummingbird nests are really tiny — it’s hard to see that they are actually nests rather than just a mess of leaves, etc.!
Squirrel nests do include leaves. The birds have twigs and mud. Some squirrels live in tree cavities where they are protected from the wind and rain.
I’ve enjoyed noticing that as well, now that the leaves are gone. The oak tree in front of our cottage has a crow’s nest near the top of the tree, a robin nest a little way below it on the other side of the tree, and a squirrel nest in the lower branches (I saw that earlier in the year – I looked for it after I watched Mrs. Squirrel move her babies from that nest to one in a maple outside our kitchen window after a severe storm. I guess she didn’t feel safe in it any more.) And also now that the leaves are off the trees I can see the Massanutten Peak again from our living room window. π
Yes, nests and scenery are one of the blessings of bare trees. π
