When Cerwin told me that there were several orange mushrooms in the yard, I knew where they were and that they were Chicken of the Woods.
I was surprised to find four of them – two large, one medium and a tiny one (in the front). There is usually only one or two each summer. I know we could eat them, but I have never been brave enough to try cooking one.
They always grow next to one of our oak trees.
This is a closeup of the tiny one.
Because we were leaving the next day – for eight days – to three New England states, I decided to take pictures of what was going on in our own yard.
The leaves were just beginning to change colors.
The nut trees turn yellow and brown at the same time.
The top of a hickory tree was letting us know that fall is coming.
Tomorrow you will be able to follow our drive to New Hampshire.
Have a safe trip, and a good time.
Thank you. We are already home. 🙂 We left on the 6th.
What interesting mushrooms! I am beginning to notice a few trees with brown leaves — I’m not sure whether it’s fall coloring or the end of a too-hot summer for the poor dry trees, but they look a little like some of your photos here.
Our nut trees always color like this – brown and yellow together. Sometimes there are nice yellow ones.
