I am not sure what is going on with the Katydids in our woodlot. We haven’t seen any all summer, now they are greeting us each morning by hanging out on our house windows.
We hear them at dusk each evening, so know they are here.
Maybe they are laying eggs.
These will die, but their eggs will hatch next spring.
It has been fun to see them up close.
I miss my katydids. 🙁 For 31 summers I loved going to sleep at night with windows open so I could listen to them. But where we are now, I haven’t heard one all summer. 🙁 I really, really miss them. I really enjoy where we are living now, but I really miss my katydids. 🙁 (I didn’t hear any for the 19 years we lived in Ontario, either so 31 years in the country were such a treat!) At least I’ve been able to enjoy “my” cicadas all summer!

In our area we hear the cicada during the day, about dusk the katydids join them, then the cicada go to bed and the katydids sing during the night.
So that’s what these are… had one on my screen door this morning and was wondering. By the time I could get my camera, it was gone.
I read that they lay eggs at the end of summer, usually on branches and leaves.
They look like big, fat grasshoppers — I assume they are good critters that eat bugs.
I checked on that. They do eat leaves, but do not cause major damage to gardens and crops.
