Along the way, Diane entered Sunday River Covered Bridge in her cell phone, so that became our next destination. Along the way we came upon this small bridge. I don’t know if it has a name.
Sunday River Bridge
Sentences in italics are from internet articles.
The 100-foot long, 20-foot wide structure spanning the Sunday River, near Newry, Maine, was built in 1872 to replace the original which was washed away by a storm in 1811.
Today the bridge is open to foot-traffic making it a great place to go visit any time of year.
It’s not uncommon to find people painting, sketching, water coloring or photographing this super-scenic bridge. Many people believe this is how it got its nickname, Artist’s Bridge.
A view from inside the bridge.
I walked across Sunday River Road to capture this photo.
A view of Sunday River and the mountains on that side of the road.
There was another visitor that we enjoyed watching. It seemed intent on gathering acorns.
Since it was nearby, we drove up to Sunday River Ski Resort.
We noticed that workers seemed to be installing these “tunnels” and stopped to look at one. A lady walked over to us and said they are installing these for the upcoming ski season. They will transport skiers from one spot to another on a conveyer system (while on skis) similar to those in airports.
It was near lunchtime when we were in the Sunday River area. However, it was difficult to find an open restaurant because it’s a seasonal tourist area. Those that we found open were filled – with a waiting line. Consequently we drove to New Hampshire – not too far away.
It was fun to say that we took Diane to New Hampshire for her 2021 birthday meal. 🙂
This restaurant had a wood-fired pizza oven, which was right next to us. I hadn’t seen one since we were near Hoedspruit, South Africa, in 2018.
Cerwin and Diane ordered steak tips, potatoes and Brussel’s sprouts.
I ordered a shrimp sandwich. It was delicious with barbecued shrimp and pieces of fruits and veggies. (mango, sweet peppers, etc.)
We noticed this pretty yellow tree (with a church steeple and weather vane in the background) as we headed toward Mark and Diane’s house.
Just beyond the church was this sign. We didn’t realize that we were this close to a Mt. Washington entrance. Going up Mt. Washington is still on our bucket list.
We drove by more pretty scenes.
This looks like an inviting place to sit.
This group of trees captured Cerwin’s attention.
We probably couldn’t replay this road trip because we traveled by entering places of interest as we went along.
Thanks, Diane, for helping us find these pretty and interesting spots.
Fun pictures. Interesting that you were just 8 miles from the Mt Washington auto road. We drove up it on Tuesday, and it was a beautiful clear day. The cog railway, from the opposite side of the mountain, would be another interesting option.
I think we may try the cog when we go.
Color is gorgeous. Color in the mount9sins here but not much here where we live. Unusual but temps have stayed pretty warm. Looks like an amazing trip
Thanks. It was a beautiful day.
