Traveling to Maine

I enjoy this drive because we get up early enough to head into the sunrise – about an hour or two after we get on the road.

At one point we could see the moon.

Our drive was fairly normal until we were close to the New Jersey/New York state line on RT 287 when traffic was at a stop for 45 minutes. We learned later that a gasoline tanker rolled over an burned to almost nothing. The traffic was actually stopped 3 hours. We only got into the last 45 minutes. There were emergency vehicles and fire trucks all over the area.

We saw the remains of the truck when we drove by. That is foam – not snow. I read about the incident on the internet and learned that the driver died. It also mentioned that they needed so many fire trucks because the trees were on fire.

These are pictures of the accident from the internet.

Tappan Zee Bridge

It is difficult to capture the New York City skyline at the other end of the Hudson River because of the wire netting on the bridge.

From the accident until we reached Maine – traffic was heavy and much slower than usual. We saw another accident and seemed to be in slow construction traffic for hours. It usually takes us about 10 hours to get to Mark and Diane’s house. This time it took us 11-1/2 hours.

We began seeing pretty signs of fall as we drove north.

It was not a peak weekend for colored leaves, but there were areas that were quite pretty.

We were especially glad to see the bridge to Maine following the rather slow trip.

More fall beauty in Maine.

Colorful car and kayaks.

It was good to arrive at Mark and Diane’s place safely. Diane was babysitting this cute little guy while his mom (a friend) worked.

More about Maine in my next post.
