As we were coming home from Bible School, we drove by a place with a bunch of mushrooms in their front lawn. Cerwin said, “We have some too – beside the garage.” Sure enough there was a fairy ring.
A fairy ring is a naturally occurring ring or arc of mushrooms. They are found mainly in forested areas. Fairy rings are detectable by sporocarps (fungal spore pods) in rings or arcs. The rings may grow to over 33 feet in diameter.
A mushroom ring may make the grass inside the ring greener as the fungi produce nitrogen for the soil. Sometimes large amounts of mushrooms may make it difficult for water to reach the grass roots, which will cause the lawn to turn brown. The condition is usually temporary.
Because it was dark, I decided to wait until morning to take more pictures – and instead focused on the pretty waxing crescent moon.
By Friday morning it was easier to photograph the mushrooms.
The bottom of the mushrooms are fascinating.
