September 8 – The day after returning from our West Virginia Trip.
I was pleased to look out our kitchen window to see an adult red-headed woodpecker feeding a young one.
Because I only began seeing these woodpeckers on a regular basis this summer, and started reading about them, I just learned that the young woodpeckers do not have red heads.
It was fun watching this parent teach its young one how to eat on its own.
Male and Female red-headed woodpeckers have similar markings and both care for their babies.
A few days later (September 12) I saw this young one eating on its own. Its parents must have done a good job. ๐
It was just beginning to get red feathers on its head.
I hope they stay all winter and keep multiplying in our woodlot. However, I read that they usually travel south for the winter.
I love being able to watch these pretty birds from our kitchen window.
Beautiful pictures!!! I found your site via the Weber’s Daily Encouragement (the Webers were my former pastor). I now live in NC and am an avid birder! ๐ Have been enjoying your nature and faith-filled posts!
Thank for for letting me know. That is encouraging to me.
