I don’t remember seeing these birds as often as I have been seeing them this summer. My Stokes Field Guide to Birds tells me that I did see one in March 1999.
I am trying to learn the difference between the male and female. The males red head is supposed to go deeper into his chest than the female.
I just learned that they like acorns. Maybe I will have to gather some acorns for the ground feeder.
I am hoping that a woodpecker family has set up housekeeping in our woods and will come back next year – or stay for the winter.
I think he is suspicious that I am watching him. 🙂
Ignoring me.
I am thankful for the nice variety of birds at our feeders and look forward to the return of the winter birds in the next few months.
Beautiful shots of the woodpeckers!
Thank you. They are so pretty.
