Thursday, June 25 through Wednesday, July 8
This is what the plants looked like two weeks ago – Thursday, June 25.
This is when cultivating can be done – before there are vines all over the field.
I read somewhere that mules are better to use for cultivating than horses, because mules are careful where they step.
Five days later – Tuesday, June 30 – there were about a dozen Amish people hoeing weeds – probably between plants and in areas where the cultivator doesn’t reach.
The next day – Wednesday, July 1 – Jacob was back in the field cultivating again.
The dust tells you that we could use some rain.
A short time later I noticed these three boys were hoeing in the same area where he was cultivating.
Yesterday he spread lime or fertilizer – to improve the fertility of the soil.
This is what the butternut squash look like today – growing and healthy.
Being from the mid-west, I wasn’t aware of the fact that mules were careful of where they stepped when working
I think they are more aware of their surroundings and more surefooted.
