Benefit Truck Parade and Chicken Barbecue for Allen and Edith Wenger

Saturday Afternoon, May 30

Allen drives a 2000 Peterbilt 379 and pulls a walking floor trailer for Dutch Country Transport. He has two million miles on the truck. There were 400,000 on it when he bought it.

Allen’s journey began during the summer of 2018 when he discovered a lump on his neck.

He had it checked and tested in August where it was determined that he had papillary thyroid cancer.

His thyroid was removed in September followed by radioactive iodine (radioiodine) treatment and was quarantined for five days.

Earlier this year he noticed some neck pain and went for a checkup.

It was determined that he needed surgery in the surrounding area of his thyroid. The surgery was delayed due to coronavirus, but did happen on May 6. The surgeon removed thirteen lymph glands. Ten of them were cancerous. At this point he is not sure of future treatment.

He was off work for two weeks and is working his way back to a full schedule.

They were overwhelmed and blessed by those who participated in the truck parade and benefit to help with their two-year journey.

The drivers met at a business lot in Manheim where everyone enjoyed chicken barbecue.

When I arrived at the Wenger’s house, many of their children and family members were waiting for the parade of trucks to begin.

A fire truck led the parade – followed by Allen’s truck. If I remember correctly his truck was driven by a son. In this photo he is preparing to back in their driveway.

I am posting only a few of the 111 big rigs that made up the parade. There were also several pickups and hotrods.

Our son Jeff in his old Chevy.

Another truck backed into the driveway. I didn’t ask if the driver was a relative or another son.

The last truck also backed into their driveway. I think this was a son.
