Jere and Kristen have the benefit and sometimes the non-benefit of being our children who live the closest to us. Because of that, we are often the beneficiaries of Kristen’s love for cooking and baking.
Below are just a few things she and Jere brought us recently. I think everything was made from her sourdough starter. And if you ever had sourdough starter, you know that you need to keep using it – because it keeps multiplying.
From the Internet: Sourdough bread is made by the fermentation of dough using naturally occurring lactobacilli and yeast. Sourdough bread has a more sour taste and better inherent keeping qualities than breads made with baker’s yeast, due to the lactic acid produced by the lactobacilli.
Bread
I sliced it and froze it for toasting and things like below – chipped dry-beef.
This is actually chipped dry-mule deer – from Cerwin’s Nebraska hunt the other year – on top of the bread.
One day they brought coffee cake.
This chocolate chip bake arrived hot – right out of the oven.
Because it arrived about bedtime – I had my first taste with coffee the next morning.
Another day Jere brought this loaf of delicious bread.
I began teasing him that I think he was using food to check up on us.
This is a delicious kind of cake that you don’t want to eat before bedtime – at least if you want to sleep. A dark chocolate coffee cake with expresso icing.

Then there was the day – like I said earlier – that Jere may wish he lived farther away. ๐ We were having trouble with our internet being slow – maybe because everybody is home these days. Cerwin had to take his laptop to another place in the house – closer to the router – if he wanted to get on the internet.
We had considered buying an internet extender long before this, because our router is at the other end of the house and in our basement office. But now it seemed necessary and could no longer be put off.
When it arrived the next day (via Amazon) I thought maybe this old-not-very-techy great grandma could hook it up. I was able to link it with our router, but the easy connection plan did not work. So we called Jere who came right over and figured out what needed to be done.
Now we have a better connection to our internet and Cerwin is again able to sit in his La-Z-Boy and use his laptop.
I do want to add that each of our children is checking up on us – some daily. We are loved and cared for in many ways.
How delightful! I am having to cook again, after eating dinners out for many years, and it’s become quite a project! I think the hardest thing is remembering to take food out of the freezer early enough to thaw it in time to cook it!! These all look delicious!
Me too! I have never had to cook so much. ๐
Oh my — yourt booster made it possible for me to reply without using the email reply that I’ve been doing — yay!
๐
My kids check up on me every day too. % of them live close, but they don’t come in the house–just in case.
That should be a 5. The other 2 phone o test often too.
At this point, Jere is the only one we see, but we keep a distance. I really miss seeing everyone.
Any chance you could post the recipe for the Dark Chocolate Coffee Cake and Expresso icing?
I will check with Kristen. It is her recipe.
I sent it to you by email. I cannot post it here because it is in a PDF. If you did not receive it send me your email by messenger on Facebook at Doris Jean High. It needs a sourdough starter.
