The tallest and usually least colorful trees in our yard are the Locust.
Most of the yellow leaves are on our nut trees – mostly shellbark
The maple leaves vary from orange to red.
I have lived here for most of my life and still find the sight of colored leaves on a sunny fall day to be breath-taking.
The leaves are beautiful! Is shellbark something like mock hickory?
Might be. I never heard of mock hickory. We do have some hickory trees, but I haven’t learned to know which are hickory and which are shell bark.
From what I can determine, they are both from the hickory family. We have a lot of mock hickory, aka mockernut hickory in our woods as well as hickory. From pictures and descriptions, they appear to be very closely related. They belong to a section of the walnut family.
We came up with the same conclusion. We have shellbark and hickory and always forget which is which. 🙂
