I took these pictures during the week of August 14-21. The harvesting was done on the 20th and 21st.
I have enjoyed watching the maturing of the butternut squash in the field across from our yard.
When I asked our Amish neighbor if they were going to hand pick them, he said, “No, they will be harvested by a combine-like piece of equipment.” I had never seen that, so was hoping I would be home when the equipment came.
I was home when the three pieces of equipment arrived on the 20th.
It was interesting to watch this operation. It was picked up by the combine, then dumped into another bin, before being dumped into the big rig.
So far they have filled two of these trailers. Harvest stopped for the past few days, but there is still almost half of the squash left in the field.
I do wonder how many thousands of squash the field held.
I love our country life.
My goodness what a lot of butternut squash! It’s interesting to see the Amish using gasoline powered equipment for the harvest, but also interesting to see how relatively simple the machines are to simply pick up the squash and put it into the larger bins!
They brought in someone else to harvest the pumpkins. The Amish do not have anything like this.
Thank you for that clarification!
Oh … my.,..wow! What an interesting post. Butternut squash is my favorite squash.
I had no clue that they could be harvested by machine, and I have never stopped to think of fields of squash! Thanks form this informative post.
I loved learning about it too,
Wow Doris…you use machines to harvest! And that crop is soo much
