Adjusting to a new time zone – 7 hours ahead of my familiar zone – meant the sun was up when I got awake. I made a cup of coffee and sat on the arm of the sofa section next to the open window to see what was going on outside.
Being on the edge of a bustling city – next to the ocean – is certainly different from my usual morning atmosphere.
I was a bit puzzled about the reason this helicopter had a bucket/basket dangling below it. Later in the day I learned that it was heading to the ocean for water to help put out a fire. It is very dry in the Cape Town area.
Another puzzle was solved when I heard the train go by. I was awakened by an unusual sound – thinking someone was doing laundry and the washing machine was off balance. It was the train. 🙂 Checkers (upper right) was a local grocery store we used for needed supplies.
A rather pretty pigeon on the ledge near our window.
We enjoyed having a very comfortable apartment in a Surfers Corner apartment while in Muizenberg. It was a very secure and guarded place. Each of us had to use our finger print to get in and out of the hotel.
I was slightly amused to be in Muizenberg, South Africa, and find that our apartment had a Maine theme.
We met Jana near the YWAM headquarters where she was saying goodbye to teammates.
There were lots of hugs and tears.
Kosie’s Place is a restaurant frequented by the YWAM team.
How pleasant to find restaurant owners who are not afraid of sharing their faith.
They make ordering breakfast quite simple. I ordered a small. The medium has two eggs, the large has three eggs. You can have your egg however you want it. Over light, medium, hard, or scrambled. Each on a piece of toast – accompanied by French fries and bacon.
Some of the YWAM students who were still in town had breakfast next to us. There were also new students in another area of the room – getting acquainted with YWAM and the area.

Jana had to have her apartment (above Kozie’s) empty the day we were there and was glad to have brothers to carry some of her stuff.
Inge wanted me to take pictures of trucks in South Africa for an article in TFC’s Highway News and Good News.
We went by this construction site as we walked back to our hotel.
Many of the surroundings reminded us that we were no longer in the northeast portion of the United States.
A large open area inside our hotel – after going through the secure entrance.
Jere looking down on us while walking to their apartment.
Ian and Cerwin preparing to enter our part of the building. Ian and Josh slept in one bedroom in our apartment. We each had two bedrooms. The sofa served as an extra bed in Jere and Kristen’s apartment – making room for 9 people.
Looking down on the large entrance area to the apartments.
Looking at the building from outside. Surfers Corner has two apartment buildings – Empire and Greens. We were in Empire.
Our hotel was on the beach next to False Bay – part of the Indian Ocean.
A trash truck next to our hotel.
We saw this truck on our way to Table Mountain. It was rare to see a big rig in the Cape Town and Muizenberg area.
As we drove by this brush fire, I learned what the helicopter with its dangling bucket was doing as we watched one dumping water here.
In this photo, you can see the smoke from the base of Table Mountain.
The highest point in this picture is where we planned to go by cable car.
It was about this time that we learned the cable cars were being shut down for the afternoon because of high winds. The representative told us to come back early the next day to use our tickets.
Jere and Kristen used the opportunity to get a picture of their children.
We added Kristen and Jere to the mix.
We regrouped, called Uber drivers (we needed two for the nine of us), and went to Boulders to see African Penguins (something we planned to do the next day). I will tell you about that tomorrow night.
I am breathless already!
You would have loved it.
