Cousin’s Week – Day 2 – Visiting Lititz – Part 1

Tuesday Afternoon, July 14

Unless you are from this area, Lititz looks like a strange name for a town. It is pronounced Lit – its. Lititz was founded by members of the Moravian Church in 1756 and was named after a castle in Bohemia near the village of Kunvald.

In 2013 Lititz was name America’s Coolest Small Town http://lititzpa.com/.

I get to Lititz several times a week, because the Lititz Post Office is the designated post office for TFC’s bulk mailings.

1I asked the children to stop next to this pretty area of Main Street as we walked toward Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery.

3 (1)Our tour of the bakery was set for 2 PM.

3 (3)Our guide asked us to line up along this table where there were many blobs of “dough.”

It wasn’t real pretzel dough for various reasons.

3 (4)Everyone was told to roll out their dough until it looked like the rod in front of them.

3 (5)Then they were told to shape it like a U.

3 (6)Then the special Sturgis twist.

3 (7)Sturgis first made soft pretzels. The hard pretzel was a mistake – when he forgot about it in the oven and it baked too long.

3 (9)There were too many people, so those who were finished stood back while the next set made pretzels. Since no one took Jesse’s place, he kept trying to perfect his. 🙂

7 (3)It was an interesting tour, and we all got a small bag of pretzels at the end.

We also bought pretzels in the gift shop before going to Freeze & Frizz for a snack.
