Spring 2014 Banquet ~ Friday, March 21
Yoder’s Restaurant ~ New Holland, Pennsylvania
This banquet is an attraction to us because of the three summers (late 1980s) we spent at Pikangikum ~ a native island reserve in Northwest Ontario ~ leading a team of young people from our church to teach a one-week Bible school.
Our friendship with Merle Nisly began back then when he was our pilot and helped work us through the process of teaching Bible school on the reserve.
He is now LHMN’s president, and gave an interesting update and overview of the ministry.
We missed his wife, Rita, who was in Southwestern USA with a daughter and son-in-law who recently welcomed a baby boy to their family.
We love to hear from Colleen Estes, who lives and serves with the residents of Pikangikum. It is difficult and tiring work due to alcohol and suicide, but she is always positive and has a passion to share the love of Christ with those who live there.
It was exciting to hear her tell about a couple who called a small group prayer meeting and farewell party for her before she left on this six-week mission trip and sabbatical.
Another highlight of this years banquet was hearing from Ken Funk who also serves with LHNM – as a pastor/leader of ministry in Thunder Bay.
Back in the ’80s he and Sondra were very hospitable and helped us with lodging and food in the home base in Red Lake and in getting 16 of us transported to Pikangikum.
We were blessed and encouraged with great information and memories.
I missed you too and missed being there this year. Thanks for the photos and script!
Thanks for commenting. 🙂
A very nice post, Doris. It was great to see you and Cerwin again.
Thanks, Merle.
