Day 4 – Our Trip to Calgary

Glendive, Montana, to Shelby, Montana

1 (1)My favorite travel feature for this entry: A box of unscented baby wipes. They make fabulous wash cloths.

1 (2)Our view from the truck window this morning – in Glendive, Montana.

1 (3)The view as we pulled forward and prepared to leave the truck stop at 5:00 a.m.

1 (4)Just outside of town.

1 (6)After deciding that we saw a lot more animals than people, I checked Montana’s people verses cattle statictics. There are 2,500,000 cattle and 998,199 people. That’s more than 2.5 times more cattle than people.

1 (7)There was a bit of morning fog.

1 (8)After turning north on Route 13, we eventually turned west on Route 2 and stayed there until Shelby.

1 (9)We saw a few antelope and mule deer – mostly between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Some were at a distance and others impossible to photograph with the trucker driving 65 miles an hour. 🙂

We were also surprised when a pheasant ran across the road.

1 (10)We drove for a long time this morning without seeing another vehicle on the road.

1 (11)Some morning scenery.

1aWe were pleased to find a rest stop about 8:30 – after failing to find a restaurant for breakfast. Cerwin took time to wash the windows AGAIN. He has to open the hood to do that.

I was glad to get out and walk around a bit.

1bLook at this scene. I see a herd of horses, flowers, weeds, and discarded barbed wire fence.

Do you? Let’s look more closely.

3 (2)This photo shows the name of the chapel “Chinook Winds Chapel”.

Adding the name was one of the final touches before we left home.

3 (4)Back on the road again after a few Nutter Butter cookies and a cup of coffee. (Cerwin fills his thermos with coffee each morning – which stays hot all day.)

3 (5)These are the first and only white cattle we saw on this trip.

3 (6)This would be a long bike ride.

We met three sets of bike riders today. Each appeared to be on the ride for the long haul.

3 (7)Almost every field is lined with a fence.

3 (8)Roads seem to go on forever.

3 (9)We found a restaurant in Malta at 9:30 a.m. where there was parking for a rig.

3 (10)This is the first time we parked next to a farm tractor in a truck parking lot.

3 (11)We were surprised to see these two antelope in the early afternoon.

3 (13)This was the scenery for most of the afternoon – with a few small towns now and them. Sometimes we saw signs for a town, but could not find a town because it was many miles to the north or south.

3 (12)As we approached Shelby, we saw a mountain range to our north. I expect it is in Canada.

3 (14)We saw a lot of abandoned buildings – houses and barns.

3 (15)Now we are parked at the Comfort Inn in Shelby, Montana, about forty miles south of Alberta, Canada.

When I looked out the window of our room before supper, I saw that Cerwin was washing the truck windows AGAIN.

This final picture from today is for our daughter Deb (who is caring for a rescued prairie dog). This little guy ran across the pavement in front of us when we were walking back to the motel – following supper at the next door truck stop, the only restaurant in this area. I took the picture with Cerwin’s cell phone.
